Firebird

The Phoenix (Phoenix phoenix).

This is what's written in Arthur Spiderwick's Field Guide to the Fantastical World Around You about the Phoenix.

Phoenixes (Family: Vetustidae)Edit

The Phoenix, sometimes called a fenix or firebird, is a majestic, glorious bird with purple and gold plumage. Custom says there is only one phoenix alive at a given time, but the fowl is so rare no one has been able to corroborate this notion. They do not require food to sustain themselves, though they have been known to eat the gum of a frankincense tree (Boswellia thurifera). They can carry very heavy loads and can reverse wounds with their tears.

A phoenix will live for centuries (five hundred years, according to one source), where upon it will build a nest of cinnamon, myrrh and spikenard. There it incinerates itself by reflecting the sun off its plumage to spark a fire and fanning the flames with its wings. Ten seconds later, the same phoenix is reborn from the ashes.

Known PhoenixesEdit

A Fenix was kept by a rich patrician in his winter garden. When Arthur Spiderwick was invited to eat diner with the aristocrat, he soon found out it was the legendary Firebird. On August the 13th, Arthur requested to borrow the bird for a couple of days so he could study it closer, in exchange for a portrait of the patrician's granddaughter. Arthur provided the Phoenix with the appropriate building materials, and the Fowl soon started to build it's nest. It's unknown how the aristocrat reacted when his beautiful songbird was turned to ash.
